Gastroesophageal Reflux in Childrend

EnglishSpanish
Gastroesophageal reflux is very frequent in infants and stands for one of the most common consultations with pediatricians. It consists in the retrograde movement of acid or alkaline gastric contents to the esophagus. This condition can produce a number of symptoms ranging from simple regurgitation (a small volume of gastric content that retrogrades to an infant’s mouth after it has been fed with milk), to vomiting or other disorders resulting in growth alterations and involvement of the respiratory system secondary to macroaspirations (acid produces reflex obstruction), microaspirations, reflex bronchial responses (bronchoconstriction), and laryngeal spasm. The constant irritation of the gastric juice on the esophageal mucosa causes inflammation, ulcers, lacerations, and petechia, among other things.
