Multiple sclerosis

EnglishSpanish
Affection of the myelin covering the axons of the nerve cells in the brain, the brain stem, the cerebellum, the spinal cord, and the optic nerve, characteristic of this disease, results in a reduction in the speed of conduction of the electric current (action potential). Multiple sclerosis -the most common of all demyelinating diseases- affects mainly patients between 20 and 45 years old. While having an unknown etiology, it is believed that there is some infectious pathogenic or environmental triggering agent, followed by an autoimmune phenomenon. The risk to suffer from multiple sclerosis amounts to 1-2% in the northern hemisphere, although these percentages can be increased 15 to 25 times if a family member is affected, since some genetic factor becomes thus evident. Antigens of the major histocompatibility complex (such as the HLA-DR2), which are associated to this disease, have been identified.
