Tonsillitis

EnglishSpanish
Tonsillitis or amygdalitis is the inflammation of the tonsils, wich is generally caused by bacteria or viruses. The commonest bacterial triggering agent is Streptococcus, however, this microorganism is an infrequent cause of pharyngitis in infants, as in this age group, the commonest causes involve viruses. The inflammation of the pharynx is caused by both bacteria and viruses, as well as by other factors, such as cold and irritating products. It can be associated with other disorders in the upper respiratory tract, and in children it can be used as an indicative sign for diagnosis. The group A β−hemolytic streptococci scattered in the air, enter through the nose and stay in the throat, where they multiply and produce toxins, invading the tissue. The pharynx becomes intensely red and edematous, covering the tonsils with a soft, whitish exudate.
