Pulmonary hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension refers to a disorder in which artery pressure in the pulmonary artery is higher than normal. This disease may be defined as a pulmonary artery systolic pressure greater than 30 mm Hg or a pulmonary artery mean pressure greater than 20 mm Hg. Normal pulmonary artery systolic pressure at rest is 18 to 25 mm Hg, with a mean pulmonary pressure ranging from 12 to 16 mm Hg. Pulmonary hypertension can be primary (also referred to as essential or idiopathic), or secondary. The etiology of
primary pulmonary hypertension is unknown. Secondary pulmonary hypertension can be a complication of many pulmonary, cardiac or extrathoracic conditions. Unrelieved pulmonary hypertension leads to right ventricular failure, which puts life at risk.

La hipertensión pulmonar se refiere al trastorno en el cual los valores de la presión arterial en la arteria pulmonar se encuentran incrementados por encima de los valores normales. Esta patología se define por el hallazgo de valores de presión arterial sistólica de la arteria pulmonar mayores a 30 mm Hg o a valores de presión arterial media mayor a 20 mm Hg.

La presión sistólica normal en la arteria pulmonar durante el reposo es de entre 18 y 25 mm Hg, con una presión pulmonar media de entre 12 y 16 mm Hg. La hipertensión pulmonar puede ser primaria (también denominada esencial o idiopática), en este caso la causa es desconocida. La hipertensión secundaria puede deberse a complicaciones de distintas patologías pulmonares, cardíacas o extratorácicas. Sin tratamiento esta enfermedad conduce a la insuficiencia ventricular derecha que pone en riesgo la vida.
