Hypothyroidism

EnglishSpanish
Hypothyroidism is a hypofunctional state of the thyroid gland with alterations at different levels of the hypothalamushypophysis-thyroid axis. Primary hypothyroidism is probably an autoimmune disease and results in a shrunken gland with little or no function. Dysfunction of hypothalamic-pituitary axis results in secondary hypothyroidism, while hypothalamic pathology produces the tertiary form. Thyroid hormone deficit is manifested by a variety of signs and symptoms. The patient’s age, the severity of the defect and the time when hormonal replacement therapy is initiated, all of them affect the clinical evolution.
