Genital Herpes

EnglishSpanish
One of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) is genital herpes. It is caused by Herpes simplex virus type 2, a double-chain DNA that induces a self-limited eruption on the skin and the mucosa in the anogenital area. This infection occurs in the first years of sexual activity and is transmitted through secretions or sexual intercourse. The primary infection takes place 5 to 7 days after it has been transmitted. Following the incubation period, vesicles become visible and the virus finds shelter in the sacral ganglia, where it stays dormant until it reactivates, reinfecting the skin (recidivating phase that lasts for years) with clinical manifestations.
