Fever is the main cause of consultations with pediatricians and, at the same time it constitutes one of the symptoms parents mainly worry about. It consists in an increase in body temperature -regulated by the hypothalamus-, and is generally a symtpom resulting from the response to an external or internal agent damaging the body. By means of complex mechanisms, the hypothalamus releases different substances that activate or strenghten the immune systems by increasing the set-point of the thermoregulator center, fever being the manifestation of this response. Thus, fever is no less than the manifestation of all the defensive mechanism set in motion so that it can control the damaging agent.
La fiebre constituye la primera causa de consulta en pediatría y a su vez es uno de los síntomas que más preocupa a los padres. La fiebre es el aumento de la temperatura corporal, la cual se encuentra regulada por el hipotálamo. Es un síntoma que se genera en respuesta a un agente externo o interno que daña al organismo. Mediante mecanismos complejos el hipotálamo libera distintas sustancias que activan o potencian los sistemas inmunológicos. Esto lo hace aumentando el punto de ajuste del centro termorregulador, lo que se expresa en forma de fiebre. De esta manera, la fiebre no es otra cosa más que la exteriorización de todo el mecanismo defensivo que se ha puesto en marcha para poder controlar al agente que produce el daño.
